My primary role with Copcoy is operationally client facing and training, whilst also supporting the other members of the team.
Over my career I’ve worked in various typically high-risk industries including quarrying, construction, and agriculture. The ‘golden-thread’ through this journey has certainly been looking out for people’s wellbeing along the way.
I studied mechanical engineering then joined the graduate trainee scheme with Tarmac UK. This gave me a well-rounded front line foundation in the areas of the business - from road contracting to quarrying – both hard rock and sand and gravel - leading to a quarry management role. In this environment safety is critical and it was here that I took my first real step towards a career in health and safety.
Combining work with periods of study, I first gained my National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety followed by my Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma. I am now a Chartered Member of IOSH since 2018, and able to deliver IOSH accredited courses locally in Jersey and abroad. I also maintain my NPORS Instructor and Examiner accreditation for practical based training.
I have worked as a Health and Safety advisor at Copcoy since 2010.
My passion for Health and Safety developed during my early career in construction and in 2005 I commenced training as an asbestos analyst and surveyor. Upon completion of this training and subject to company audits I became the only UKAS accredited asbestos bulk analyst in the Channel Islands. I completed the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health late in 2005. Following this I completed a diploma in Occupational Health and Safety in Practice. I became a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) in February 2012.
One of my peers once described Health and Safety as “Its all about sensible risk management and intelligent solutions” and this has stayed with me throughout my career.
One of my proudest moments was being part of the Health and Safety team involved in construction of the Nightingale wing of Jersey’s General Hospital during the coronavirus pandemic. Whilst the project was challenging the rewards far outweighed these challenges.
Associated with the construction industry from 1971, working in local government, contracting and support services in the UK, Channel Islands, Europe, Middle East, Far East and Australia.
Since 1994 I have been involved in H&S support including project management, CDM Coordinator, Principal Designer, HSPC, consultancy and delivering training.
